You said debate with you on twitter so I guess I might as well. :) It's not like I have anything better to do. :D

I know what you mean about the slutfest, and I guess the enjoyability of Halloween depends on who you celebrate it with. I've been to a couple parties and seen some fantastic costumes, and only a few slutty ones.
The place I see the most sluts is, of course, at the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Which I think is forgivable because it's kind of the point. Rocky Horror is fun and dressing up as the characters is half of that.

I love to dress up, I love to tell scary stories and watch scary movies, I love to decorate my apartment! I guess it really is a preference thing because it's always been my favourite Holiday. I've never been that religious, and I think that celebrating the things that terrify us is so much fun. It also gives people the chance to be creative and to be entirely different people for a day.

I mean, for me Holidays aren't always about something completely sacred. Sometimes they are just a way to break up that long stretch between Thanksgiving and Christmas. It's something new to do, something to get excited about, and something to help you exercise your creativity.

And, well, there's free chocolate! And giving other people free chocolate!

I'm not an "excuse to get drunk and dress like a slut solely for the purpose of dressing like a slut" person, and the parties I go to don't usually have much of that, so that's probably why I see it differently.

This year I went as Guitar Hero... I try to avoid the consumerism (and by "avoid the consumerism" I mean "I have little money and therefore don't want to spend any on a $50 costume") and made my costume out of cardboard and clothes I already owned. Seven dollars for a cape and a mask! Haha.
I think Holidays are what you make them. :) And I think they are about fun and doing things you love. Society can tend to take things too far... But that doesn't mean that I have to!

But if you don't enjoy it, don't participate in it, I guess. Because like you said, there's no sense in forcing it. :D

I Agree so much with you! There really isn't a point for holloween and it should definitely not be celebrated as a special day such as Christmas, Mothers day, Father's day etc. Very well said!!

halloween is the only day where girls are allowed to be, dressed or acted like sluts. thats the point. so its not totally pointless. in fact, girls if not constrained by societys "moral" codes do behave naturally like i described above. so hallowen is the only day for them to express their sexual freedom!

It's refreshing to read about girls your age who actually agree with my stance on Halloween and skimpy outfits! :D And wow, you even mentioned this to your classmates? That's pretty awesome. I never had the experience of attending high school in the US, as I moved here as a freshman at university. I'm quite thankful for my all-girls' high school education back home. We all wore uniforms and make up wasn't allowed, so we didn't have the slut problem on a daily, on-campus basis. [Parties are a different matter, however. xD]

Your adopted sisters are your family members despite their Chinese and Taiwanese heritage; ergo, they should be celebrating St. Patrick's Day as dictated by your family's traditions. I've got nothing against that, either. I think that they should celebrate it. Your sisters will attach their own subjective significances related to St. Paddy's based on the memories that you all have created together as a family. I think that's wonderful. :)

Thanks for your kind words. It's a pity that I haven't updated in a long time now. I will really find the time to update during this so-called winter break. Thanks for your encouragement!

PS: I sent you an email. :)

Yes, I'm from FanGathering. (I'm one of the four new mods, in fact!) We really miss you on there! Come back and say hi sometime!
Whether or not it's Halloween makes no difference to what the girls at my high school wear. If it's warm enough, they'll dress as much like whores as the dress code allows them to. I'm one of the few exceptions to this rule, since I'm only thirteen and still used to middle school. (Skipping eighth grade is certainly not as fun as people might think it is. I'm too young for high school!)
I mentioned your viewpoint on Halloween in LA a few weeks ago, and the reactions of my classmates were *very* funny. They were all freaking out (barring Kayla, one of the few other non-sluts in the school). Just goes to show that America is falling apart at the seams. We can't even truly impress on children the basic concept of modesty! This country has something very wrong with it. [/pointless minirant]
You know, my little sisters celebrate St. Patrick's Day, and they were adopted from China and Taiwan. (Though it may just be in self-defense, because the Irish part of me loves celebrating by enforcing the green rule. No one is safe from me if they're not wearing green. XD I'm not ashamed to admit it.)
I forgot to say this last time, but I love your blog! It's really awesome!
Hoping to see you back on FanGathering sometime soon,
Le grá,
Julissa

I assume you're from FanGathering? :) Yeah, to each his/her own, I suppose. I just don't like how it's become THE perfect excuse to dress up like a whore. Way to further degrade & objectify yourselves, ladies! Yay. As for St. Paddy's--well, I was just explaining how I don't celebrate holidays that have no significance to me. I'm not bashing Halloween-lovers or St. Paddy's Bacchanalians, sure, it's the fun that counts, I guess. But I am just not liking the Halloween Slut part. I mean, c'mon, ladies, you could do better than that! PS: I found the poster via Google search, keywords: "halloween slut". XD

You're right, Americans love to do things in a BIG way. And it is just another excuse to party & have fun, I guess. What irks me the most is how it's become distorted: fun & candy for the kiddos, sure, but slutfest for the female "adults". And the men are free to wear whatever they want, but the ladies ALWAYS are slutty.

Okay, I'm just whining & rambling here; I'm sorry. I should get back to art homework. I shouldn't even be here; I just got side-tracked. I'm also sleep-deprived. Yes, let's blame that. Thanks for commenting.

I wouldn't go as far to call Halloween 'consumerist' -- it's actually quite 'pure' as far as these things go! There aren't any cards, nor any gifts or flowers or chocolates.

It's just an excuse to party I guess.

As far as I know, the celebration/whatever it is has been around for a long, long time (but I assume you've looked up the derivation of it...!)

Also, it's much bigger in the US than any other part of the world. Not sure why. Probably because Americans tend to always do things in a BIG way... :)

I can totally sympathize with your dislike of Halloween. I, myself, wore an Artemis (the goddess, not the criminal mastermind) costume, but each and every one of my female schoolmates dressed in a sl*tty manner. *shudders*
Though, really, about St. Patrick's Day, it's the fun that counts, in my opinion. I feel sorry for anyone who never had the experience of building a leprechaun trap.
And, that poster is tawesome! Where do you find all these amazing things?

Lol, no I didn't make that poster, sadly. XD I would have made the same thing, though.
You went as an Abu Sayyaf? For real? Haha, brilliant.

I'm actually in a little predicament right now. I don't want to hurt my friend's feelings by turning down her invitation, but I really find Halloween pointless. Oh well. I'll find a better way to say it, I guess.

Hahaha! Did you make that little poster? I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT. And sorry, I did celebrate Halloween trick or treating last year. But don't worry, I wasn't a slut. I was an Abu Sayyaf. Hahaha. No, not slutty Abu Sayyaf either. I'd like to see "the West" turn the Abus into sluts. For one, I don't think they admit chicks into their little gang.
