D’Arvit, I used to be awesome back then!

Well, okay, that was rather conceited. But still.

I logged on my Blogger account just a few minutes ago and found two unfinished drafts happily sitting on my dashboard. Nostalgia is an amazing thing. I have decided to reproduce them right here, just like Christopher Tolkien published his daddy’s unfinished tales. Bad bad analogy, but whatever.

So here are two of my unfinished blog entries. Yeah, even that Of Magic Lists, Positivity, and Getting Your Heart’s Desire series is unfinished [I’m working on it!]. But midterms almost murdered me, and the end of the semester has been piling up a few million things all at the same time so forgive me, my loyal readers. Yes, there’s still several of you left… I’ve got 12 RSS feed subscribers, and about 20 different people who religiously check on this blog for new entries. Well, better than none, I guess. XD Thanks for staying with me. :) I intended to abandon this blog, but I just can’t. I still have lots of plans for it, but not now, I guess. Anyway, off to the first unfinished draft, which, I have to say, is the typical circa 2003-2006 D’Arvit! blog entry…

Part 1: Of Magic Lists, Positivity, and Getting Your Heart’s Desire

You see, The Secret is no secret.

That’s what I’ve been telling everyone ever since I’ve heard of this book’s “ingenious concept”.

“The Secret reveals the most powerful law in the universe.

“Without exception, every human being has the ability to transform any weakness or suffering into strength, power, perfect peace, health, and abundance…

“The Secret explains with simplicity the law that is governing all lives, and offers the knowledge of how to create - intentionally and effortlessly - a joyful life. This is the secret to everything - the secret to unlimited happiness, love, health and prosperity. ”
–Official Site

The book (and audiobook and movie and website and diary and lunchbox and undies) talks about the Law of Attraction. In a nutshell, when you think of something, you’ll get it. Positive thoughts attract positive outcomes, and vice-versa. I haven’t read it–I don’t think that I even plan on doing so–yet from what I have been hearing from the reviews and write-ups, I think that this is all common sense. People have been doing it for years… what’s so new about it? :P

Miss Jackie’s Collage

You see, back in my old university in the Philippines, UP Manila, my English professor picked me together with a friend, Essel, to join her and her other hand-picked students for some dinner and a mini get-together and party of sorts.

So he and I attended the thing (it was at Blue Frog, in Malate, Manila) just because it’s such an honor to get picked by your professor for something that sounds so exclusive. Late into the evening, we found out that our professor, Miss Lumain, is actually a Life Coach. You know, those people you pay to make your life better.

That evening, she taught us how to get our Hearts’ Desire.

Maligayang Pasko!

Or Merry Christmas, in English. ;)

This is probably the best Christmas I’ve ever had in two whole years, for a couple of reasons:

  1. I’m celebrating Christmas with the entire family for the first time in two years! [Christmas 2005 and 2006 were basically all about my parents and I in the US with my two sibs back in the Philippines]
  2. I was able to talk [well, more like chat] with tons of people whom I haven’t talked to in ages!
  3. I am semi-broke, but I know I spent my bucks on people who matter most to me: my family. [Enter irritating sighs and awwws…]

* * * * *

I was supposed to blog about collective sacrifices which Kitten and I rambled on talked about last night, but there’s just still a lot to do. [Like fix up darvit.net and convert this into a portal, for instance. :P ]

Hard Work Paying Off

I’ve been a very inactive blogger lately. Heck, I shouldn’t even call myself a blogger anymore, especially now that the definition of blogger has dramatically changed through the years! e.g. Google AdSense ads, looking for a “niche” market, blogging for the big bucks, etc.

But I digress.

Anyway, back to why my hard work has been paying off.

I just found out a couple of minutes ago that I just won the Honors College’s scholarship!

This is the first scholarship that I have applied to ever and I did this the last minute because I just realized a few days before the deadline that if I didn’t take the shot, I know that I would be kicking myself for the rest of my life.

I was also queasy about this whole application essay thing because I also did it the last minute. I was in no mood to write at that time, and thankfully, I had written this blog entry last year which I basically copied, pasted, and modified. I took a huge risk with that essay; I employed a radically different approach, and a highly unconventional one. While most scholarship essays would advise you to subtly talk about your accomplishments, extra-curricular activities, and why you’re just so awesome, I on the other hand, didn’t. Instead, I used my move to the US and the pains of being in an H4 visa and the lack of rights as my “selling points”. It was a big risky move.

Thank God it paid off.

I just could not contain my happiness… I was like, “f— that, I’m blogging this!”

Yeah, because I decided last October that I should abandon this blog if I wanted to get ahead of my studies. Thankfully, it is finally starting to pay off.

Expect to see me write on this thing by December, when my semester ends. :)

Anyway, that’s all for now. :P

WordPress and Facebook: A Deadly Combination

I remember that I decided to abandon this blog a couple of days ago. I mean, it’s just a distraction, I can’t find the time to properly fix up my theme [I was planning to create a Sandbox skin this time], and I should concentrate on important priorities instead. But then again, I was browsing Facebook [yeah, I should delete my Facebook as well] this afternoon and found out that there’s this brilliant plugin called Wordbook which allows cross-posting from your self-hosted WordPress blog [not a Wordpress.com blog, mind you] to your Facebook profile.

Basically, this is just a post to test it out. :D

And yeah, this is just me being a WordPress fangirl. :P

Damn, I should get back to Inorganic Chemistry.

PS: Yeah, I didn’t blog about Teri Hatcher’s racial slur or Pacquiao’s latest victory [they’re all soooo last month]. Happy? :P

Another Reason to Hate Imelda Marcos

Beatles Manila Concert Ticket

My mom and I were talking yesterday when suddenly, she said something that I have never heard of before:

“Pinabugbog ni Imelda yung Beatles nung andun sila sa Pilipinas,”
[Translate: Imelda (Marcos) had the Beatles beaten up while the group was in the Philippines.]

And boy, was I shocked to say the least!

My brother came in and joined in the conversation. He agreed and said that one of his high school teachers told them about it. The Beatles were beaten up by some of Imelda Marcos’ thugs at the airport, on their way out of the country during their 1966 visit.

Imelda Marcos had the Beatles beaten up at the airport? Why haven’t I ever heard of this before? Continue Reading »

Theme Crisis

NOTE: This is a very random rant, so if you are still looking for my entry called The Awful Truth About Filipinos, please read it on the said link, or scroll down after this entry. :P

I realized how bright blue on black hurts your eyes after a long time. That’s why I’ve switched over to the default Wordpress theme for now. Theme crisis much?

Yeah, I guess. :? I just can’t find the time to do layouts anymore. Ever since my move to Wordpress, this blog suffered from numerous theme crisis episodes [this one included].

Busy?

Yeah.

Lazy?

I guess so.

Sometimes, there are more things to prioritize at the moment. Currently, I’ve lost inspiration for anything web design related. Maybe it’s because I don’t have any fansites to maintain, or group blogs to moderate anymore. The fact that my parents disapprove of this doesn’t help, either.

Theme crisis? Perhaps I should call this Theme Drought. Or Creativity Drought. Or…

To Hell With It, I’m Sick Of It All.

The Awful Truth About Filipinos

I have noticed during these past few days that traffic to my blog has exponentially increased due to the fact that people who were searching for “The Awful Truth About Filipinos” on Google have landed on one of my many personal blog entries.

This has kept me wondering: what the hell is this “awful truth about Filipinos”? It definitely sounds like a title of some book, a documentary, or some nasty e-mail chain letter.

My last guess came in close. Upon further investigation, I found out that some ignorant outdated dude posted the deleted Slashdot comment that reproduced the infamous Art Bell e-mail chain letter hoax on this forum [notice the date that the forum member posted this outdated 2001 message].

The aforementioned essay rant called “The Awful Truth About Filipinos” was originally attributed to popular American radio personality, Art Bell. According to Wikipedia [because I’m too lazy to summarize stuff for you]:

The Philippine Daily Inquirer printed a letter found on a web page purportedly from Bell that made derogatory statements about Filipinos. This letter was subsequently demonstrated to be a hoax perpetrated upon Bell, who in fact had a publicly loving relationship with his Filipina wife and his previous wife Ramona who was also Filipina, and who often spoke openly about his admiration for the Filipino people on his radio show. Subsequently, the Philippine Daily Inquirer printed a retraction and apologized for printing the statement upon their verification of the hoax. This fraudulent act upon Bell still periodically results in serious threats to Bell when this material surfaces from time to time.

Please, just stop. Haven’t you even read Bob Ong’s essay regarding this? I am sick and tired of reading these types of articles and forum posts.

I hate the fact that Filipinos keep talking about how awful our country is. Please stop the hate and negativity.

I hate the fact that the most insecure strangers that I come across online are most of the time Filipinos. [i.e. They always start threads that go along the lines of “What Do You Think Of Filipinos?”. God, why are you all so insecure?!]

I hate the fact that Filipinos try to bring down their fellow Filipinos [see crab mentality].

I hate the fact that a lot of Filipinos are so ignorant. I lament the fact that many believe that “buying foreign products will kill our economy” or “speaking English is unpatriotic”.

Be open-minded.

We are living in a global economy, a global society–a global world where “nationalism isn’t bound by time or place. People from other nations migrate to create new nations, yet still remain essentially who they are,” as Patricia Evangelista has said in her award-winning speech.

I’ll end this by quoting more of Patricia’s words for those idiots who accuse me of being a traitor to my beloved country:

“Leaving sometimes isn’t a matter of choice. It’s coming back that is. The Hobbits of the shire traveled all over Middle-Earth, but they chose to come home, richer in every sense of the word. We call people like these balikbayans or the ‘returnees’ — those who followed their dream, yet choose to return and share their mature talents and good fortune.

“…I may take advantage of whatever opportunities come my way. But I will come home. A borderless world doesn’t preclude the idea of a home. I’m a Filipino, and I’ll always be one. It isn’t about just geography; it isn’t about boundaries. It’s about giving back to the country that shaped me.”

Narrow-minded fools.

It’s Like You’re Not Cool If You’re Not Busy

Busy YM This is a bit random, but yeah, a bit relevant at the same time. XD We’re all so busy. :? How true.

In semi-related-why-the-F-would-You-care news, the semester just began for me [and my brother] last Wednesday [the 15th]. And yes, as I checked my credit hours, I can confirm that I’m already a Junior as well! Also, I noticed that I welcomed a lot of changes lately. Like yesterday, I finally found my [now ex-] adviser and had my “Change of Major Request” signed. So today–as I checked my online records–I am officially a Biology: Biomedical Concentration major. :D I just came from the lab today and I left with a feeling that this is what I really want to do. It’s a great feeling, this sense of purpose.

I am just so happy that I was finally able to do it. I mean, this whole “what am I supposed to do with my life” crisis has kept me awake for hours on end. I know that this is what I want. I’ve always wanted to go into Biology and become a doctor. A bend in the road appeared when I saw how much comfortable the life of a pharmacist is. Pharmacists are highly respected in the community as well, they get called “Dr.”, and patients are more willing to consult them [since they do not trust Physician’s Assistants as much anyway].

Despite the fact that I’m taking a relatively low course load this time around [16 credit hours], I still have four labs this semester [Bio, Physics, Chem, and Zoology], an “Honors” sociology type of class [it’s more of debate class and I have a bunch of over-achieving freshmen as classmates, ugh, serves me right for criticizing everyone  ], and I decided to do volunteer work [thought it won’t kick in until a bit later on]. :?

Aside from the change of major [and apparent change of habits], here I am, typing this blog entry on my MacBook. :P I’m still all psyched up–the Honors College is just too kind! :P So far, so good, and I’m really enjoying this whole Mac thing. Really nifty stuff. I just realized that my blog looked really different on Safari, but that’s okay, I guess. XD

I also tried to start getting active on Facebook [finally]. It’s because I just got [yet another] annoying notification from Filipino rip-off social-networking site Eskwela.com which reminded me about my little self-appointed task of comparing the two [I might write a blog entry on this]. My verdict? Although Eskwela.com’s AJAX inteface, “assignments”, and “Labs” all look like a patched-up attempt at integrating all the hottest AJAX-ified Web 2.0 trends, it really isn’t very much like Facebook at all. Facebook wins this hands down because of its cleaner and more unified interface and apps. Eskwela is still on beta invites only and I hope that they smooth things out before their major release, whenever that would be.

* * * * *

Anyway, I guess that this is all for now. :) I’m testing out Wordpress on Safari, that’s all. A few hours on a Mac and I’m liking it, so far. No wonder the Mac fanboys keep accusing Vista of copying–it’s all so Vista-like, as it seems. Almost Vista, but not quite.
